Transport Guide: How to Get to Itoshima from Fukuoka

Itoshima is easily accessible by public transport, but confusing entrances can waste your travel time. Start your journey at Higashi-Hakata Station. Head to the Hakata Exit and follow the clear signage leading to Hakata Bus Terminal.

Enter the terminal through the building’s distinctive teal main entrance. Skip the staircases and take the elevator directly to the 3rd-floor waiting area.

Look for Gate 32, the dedicated platform for buses bound for Futamigaura. This direct bus takes you straight to the Itoshima ocean torii area with no transfers, ideal for independent travelers.

Important Travel Reminder: This bus route stops operating after 2 PM. Always check the latest daily timetable in advance to avoid missing your ride and ruining your itinerary.

The bus ride takes approximately one hour. Alight at the Futamigaura Meotoiwa Mae stop. Cross the road, and you will arrive at the core scenic area with stunning views of the floating torii gate and Meotoiwa Couple Rocks.

Torii Gate Photography: How to Avoid Crowds for Perfect Shots

The Itoshima floating torii gate is the landmark attraction of the area. It gets crowded during noon time and holidays — but you typically only need to wait a few minutes to capture clean, unobstructed photos.

Right next to the scenic area stands the viral Itoshima cafeteria. It constantly has extremely long queues, and customer reviews are mixed with mediocre cost performance. It is not worth your precious travel time.

For a better travel experience, skip the crowded tourist hotspots and try these local hidden spots to enjoy the authentic coastal vibe of Itoshima.

Hidden Scenic Spot: Private Ocean View Terrace with Zero Crowds

Next to the busy Itoshima cafeteria lies a tiny local shop called Zekkei. This underrated hidden gem is missed by most tourists.

Follow the staircase beside the shop downstairs, and you will find a peaceful secret terrace far away from the noisy main scenic area.

This self-service unmanned shop features front-row window seats overlooking the entire ocean, offering an unblocked panoramic sea view. You can pick your favorite snacks and drinks, pay via self-checkout, and sit back and relax. Hardly any tourists visit here. You can enjoy the sea breeze and peaceful ocean views without crowds, offering a far more comfortable experience than the overhyped spots upstairs.

Food Guide: Budget Ocean-View Seafood Bowl (No Waiting)

After visiting the torii gate and hidden viewpoint, it’s time for the highlight of this day trip — delicious and affordable seafood with stunning ocean views. Skip the crowded tourist restaurants and enjoy a premium dining experience like a local.

Take a bus from the roadside stop near the scenic area, heading toward Kyudai Gakuen Toshi Station or Hakata Tenjin. After a 10-minute ride, get off at the Zauo Honten Mae bus stop to reach this hidden food spot.

Walk backward for around 50 meters, and you will easily spot Zauo Honten with clear roadside signs.

Dining Tip: Make sure to sit on the second floor! The entire upper floor features unbeatable front-facing sea views, letting you dine while admiring the endless ocean scenery.

While nearby tourist restaurants charge over 2,300 JPY for a single seafood bowl, Zauo Honten offers premium salmon rice bowls and tempura set meals for only around 1,000 JPY. Every dish is flavorful and generously portioned with amazing value for money.

Best of all, there is almost no waiting time. I visited and practically had the entire sea-view dining area to myself. It delivers a high-end ocean-view dining experience at a local budget price, making it a must-visit restaurant in Itoshima.

Coastal Walk: Relaxing Odahama Beach

The restaurant is adjacent to quiet Odahama Beach, a local coastline free of commercial crowds. It is a favorite leisure spot for Fukuoka locals to unwind and enjoy peaceful seaside moments.

Return Guide: Travel Back to Central Fukuoka

After a full day of sightseeing, dining, and coastal walking, head back from the same bus stop where you alighted.

You can take a direct bus back to Hakata Bus Terminal, or ride to Kyudai Gakuen Toshi Station and transfer to a JR train returning to central Fukuoka. Choose the route based on your accommodation location for maximum convenience.

Final Thoughts

Itoshima is absolutely an underrated day trip treasure in Fukuoka. You can enjoy a slow-paced journey, avoid crowded commercial tourist traps, discover hidden scenic spots, and taste cost-effective ocean-view seafood. With its soothing coastal scenery and relaxed vibe, it is the perfect destination for travelers who prefer quiet, crowd-free travel experiences.
